NFOpocalypse’s resident RPG expert reviews Captain Comic 2, a little known sidescroller from the 90s which was written by Michael Denio and released only on the PC, and rants about how modern game stores are boring.

Divided into two parts because YouTube sucks and has a 10 minute limit. More of the same. This time I make it to the level 3 boss!

In almost every town in Dragon Warrior 7 there’s a well. Most of these wells don’t contain anything. Some of them contain quite a lot.
In Dragon Warrior 7, there’s an item called a Tiny Medal. You can collect these, and eventually give them to a medal collector to get special items and equipment based on how many you’ve found. It’s sort of like the Golden Skulltulas in Ocarina of Time, or the little red gems in Illusion of Gaia. Sometimes you find these in wells.

The second in my series of Let’s Play! Donpachi. I get a little farther, but still no luck. This is going to be a very long road. Video after the break.

Donpachi is a danmaku shmup, also known as a bullet hell or curtain fire shooter. It’s hard (compared to other shooters) but very rewarding. This Let’s Play series is obviously on it.
A Let’s Play! is a sort of walkthrough where instead of guiding the player, the leader plays the game and offers commentary or simply shows the game. In my case, I wanted to both chronicle my attempts to beat Donpachi on a single credit, and to showcase some excellent music.
This first attempt is set to Won’t Get Fooled Again by The Who. Video is behind the break. Hope you enjoy!

Hopefully the portion of the gaming populace that will at some point read this is familiar with Contra 4. Just in case you’re not, here’s a summary (skip this if you’ve already played it).
Contra 4 for the DS is (as of this writing) the latest 2D release of the Contra series, Konami’s classic chronicle of run-and-gun action where everything that moves can kill you just by touching you. It was designed with a very similar engine to Contra 3: The Alien Wars, as it incorporates the same weapon-switching move, but it also throws together a lot of elements from the whole series.

If somebody came up and told me that there was a game that combined my love of hammer throwing and danmaku shmups, I would vibrate with glee and pay that person exorbitant amounts of cold, hard cash. Well, in actuality, that’s not true. I’d laugh at them, tell them that hammer throwing is boring, and that no danmaku can eclipse Giga Wing, Touhou, or Ikaruga. And I was right.

These reviews are probably different from what you are used to. Rather than using numbers (as most reviewers do), I am going to grade games on a three-tier scale of opinions, as well as tell my thoughts on the minutiae (graphics, gameplay, sound, etc).
1.) Buy: This is the best result you can possibly get. Instant recommendation. The review will probably tell you why I love this game so much
2.) Rent/Borrow: Don’t bother buying, you might not like it. Usually reserved for games I enjoy but are not really widely enjoyed, or games which could appeal to people in different ways
3.) Don’t: This game is awful. Buy at your own risk.
I won’t pull punches. I also won’t always review new games. If I find an indie or freeware game that I like or think I should review, I will.
Update (February 26, 2010): Now that we’ve taken more care in tagging posts, these are now present as tags on each review post as “reviews-buy,” “reviews-try,” and “reviews-avoid.” These same tags will be applied across other authors’ posts as well as features and columns. Hope this makes things more navigable!
